Joe Roth's adaptation of Richard Price's novel 'Freedomland', attempts to address sensitive race and class issues, along with covert racism in contemporary America.

When a distraught white woman, Brenda (Julianne Moore), accuses a black man of carjacking her car with her son Cody in the backseat, it falls upon a black police detective's shoulders, Lorenzo (Samuel L. Jackson), to investigate, and prevent the racial animosity that the woman's accusation has stirred up in the town.

While questioning Brenda, Lorenzo senses something is amiss, and discovers that Brenda's brother is a cop in the next town, which is predominantly white. The cops arrest a man who resembles the sketch Brenda gave them of the culprit, and her brother beats the man senseless.

Feeling like he's running out of time before federal investigators take over the case, Lorenzo asks a group of volunteers that help search for missing children to help him and Brenda search and scan Freedomland, an area abandoned for years, for any sign of Cody.

What will the search in Freedomland 'dig up'? And what really happened to Cody?
