Ben Holmes (Ben Affleck) is headed to Savannah, Georgia to tie the knot with his fianc, Bridget (Maura Tierney). Despite a lifelong fear of flying he opts to travel from New York by plane. He sits and prepares for take off while a beautiful young woman, Sarah Lewis (Sandra Bullock) occupies the seat next to him. As the plane begins inching down the runway a seagull flies into one of its engines, causing a minor accident. All passengers are forced to evacuate the plane.

Both Sarah and Ben accompany one another back to the airport terminal. The later decides to catch a ride to Savannah with a man named Vic (Jack Kehler); Sarah, already obsessed with Ben, insists on following along. During the trip both begin to bond, at least until police pull their car over. As it turns out, Vic is a drug mule and everyone in the vehicle spends the night in jail. No matter what method of transportation Sarah and Ben choose a problem always seems to occur. If it's not a surprise hurricane, its a lack of funds. At one point the two end up stripping at a gay bar for some extra cash.

The real problem, however, is not so much the natural disasters that repeatedly impede the couple's trip. As Ben finds himself enjoying Sarah's companionship, he simultaneously begins to doubt his engagement to Bridget. Is the entire journey a divine sign that Sarah is the true girl for him?

Back home Bridget has her own moral dilemma: a former boyfriend has reappeared and an obvious spark between them still exists. Like Ben, Bridget's heart begins to wander in a different direction; anxiety levels rise as she struggles to decide between the two men.

Forces of Nature was a moderate success, recuperating its $75 million production cost plus an additional $18 million profit. The soundtrack features songs by trip-hop artists like The Propellerheads, Blue Boy, and Tricky. It won a Teen Choice Award and received two Kids' Choice Award nominations.
