(mbc.net) The year is 1585 and Queen Elizabeth (Cate Blanchett) has recently disappointed a potential suitor, Spain's King Philip II (Jordi Mollà), who hoped to transform England into a Catholic state. He still intends to fulfill the Pope's wish however by assassinating Elizabeth, hastening the ascension of her Catholic cousin, Mary Queen of Scots (Samantha Morton).
Meanwhile Elizabeth has become enchanted with Sir Walter Raleigh (Clive Owen), though he misinterprets her romantic cues, and instead weds and impregnates Bess (Abbie Cornish), the queen's lady-in-waiting. The impending arrival of Philip's Armada is a more pressing issue though, especially as the country falls deeper into debt.
Elizabeth: The Golden Age won an Oscar and was nominated for a Golden Globe. The picture proved to be a commercial success, netting $74 million at theaters worldwide.
