Dr. John Dolittle (Rex Harrison) used to treat human patients before he turned to animals. To do so, he had to learn their languages, 498 so far. Long Arrow, a friend of the doctor, sends him the rare Pushmi-pullyu, a creature that looks like a llama with a head on each end of its body. Dolittle takes it to the circus, where he meets Sophie the seal who is longing for her husband. So the good doctor disguises her as a woman, sneaks her away, and throws her into the ocean from  the cliffs. But not knowing about Sophie's disguise, the town accuses him of killing a woman. Thus Dr. Dolittle has to leave England, as he searches for the Great Pink Sea Snail, rumored to be on the floating Sea-Star island...
