(mbc.net) Rising financial executive Tim Conrad (Paul Rudd), manages to snare big-time Swiss investor Martin Mueller (David Walliams) for his firm, prompting Tim’s boss Lance Fender (Bruce Greenwood) to invite him to a closed dinner he hosts, where executives have to bring in the biggest ‘loser’ they can find. The winning schmuck gets an award, while the executive that invited him gets points with Lance.

Tim tells his girlfriend Julie (Stephanie Szostak) about the dinner and the joke behind it, which she finds extremely cruel, and Tim agrees not to go. Just before the dinner, Tim runs into Barry, an IRS employee who is trying to rescue the remains of a dead mouse off the street. Tim knows that Barry would win the dinner trophy hands down…

In the meantime, Julie lands a curator deal for eccentric artist Kieran Vollard (Jemaine Clement) who seems to be throwing his charms on Julie, as Barry tries his best to intervene with the best of intentions of protecting Tim and Julie’s love, but ends up botching everything between the young couple. Barry then tries to help Tim by obtaining Kieran’s ranch address from his boss at the IRS, Therman Murch (Zach Galifianakis) who convinces Barry that he has ‘mind-control’ powers over him that render him a slave to his every command. But Tim starts to really feel for Barry, and won’t allow his friend to be treated this way…

The film is the American adaptation of the 1998 French film ‘Le Dîner de Cons’.
