Dhoom (2004) is Bollywoods take on the successful American The Fast and the Furious series of films, revolving around an outlaw group of Mumbai bikers who commit robberies throughout the city, and then flee on high-speed motorcycles.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Jai Dixit becomes the gangs unsuccessful nemesis, who lacks the proper knowledge of motorcycle customization and racing. To resolve this deficiency he reluctantly enlists the help of Ali Akbar Fateh Khan, a local hoodrat willing to assist Dixit, though with some conditions.

When Ali and Dixits first collaboration fails miserably the young man is dismissed, but offered a lucrative position in the gang by its leader, Kabir. Ali accepts the proposition and will accompany Kabir on a trip to Goa, where they will commit one of the biggest robberies in Indias history.

But things are rarely what they seem, and Dixit has more tricks up his sleeve. The Assistant Commissioner is still on the crews tail and despite Kabirs taunts, he may be much closer than the group of thugs could possibly imagine.

Dhoom was a success in India, earning the equivalent of $12 million dollars, one of the largest sums for any Bollywood picture in 2004. Like its American inspiration, public demand necessitated a sequel, which was released in 2006.

After the films release young adults across the country were influenced by it, purchasing motorcycles and modifying them for racing purposes, much to the dismay of local authorities. While the former incident is fairly innocent the movie also resonated with local criminals, who were inspired to commit a series of robberies resembling those in the film.
