John Keating (Robin Williams) is a square peg at Welton Academy, tossing aside its antiquated teaching methods and encouraging its students to think freely. He urges the boys to restart a literary club that existed when he was a student at Welton: the Dead Poets Society.
Through the Dead Poets Society Neil (Robert Sean Leonard) and Todd (Ethan Hawke) pursue their true dreams of becoming an actor and writer respectively. This is much to the dismay of their parents, who insist they prepare for law and medical school. When the kids rebel, Keating becomes the focal point of their parents' rage.
Dead Poets Society won an Oscar and was nominated for four Golden Globes. With a conservative $16.4 million budget, the picture garnered $235 million internationally.
