Bridget Joness Diary is a romantic comedy with a twist as the heroine in the movie is overweight, clumsy and chain smokes, making her not only real but also easily a lovable and funny character played excellently by Renee Zellweger.

The movie is about a coming of age of a round bottomed British woman attempting to settle down before its too late. Bridget Jones works at a publishing house where, daily, she fantasizes about her manager Daniel Cleaver, a known womanizer played by Hugh Grant. Meanwhile, Bridgets mother introduces her to lawyer Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) a wealthy man that she hopes will become her son-in-law.

The two are initially disgusted with each other: Darcy thinks Bridget is a ditz and Bridget finds Mark to be abhorrently arrogant. Nevertheless, Mark secretly admires Bridget despite her disinterest in him.

Marks situation changes when Daniel cheats on Bridget and she begins to see Mark in a new light. From this point on the two men battle for Joness affection while Bridget documents her weight problem, alcohol and tobacco addiction, and search for a true love in her diary. Which man will win her over? Can she overcome her own weaknesses?

Zellweger received wide acclaim for her role as the thirty-something Bridget Jones earning her an Oscar nomination. Critics were initially doubtful that the Texan born and slim-figured Zellweger could transform herself into a believable, round-bottomed and brash British woman.

Their doubts were erased, however, after the determined actress studied with a vocal trainer, gained an extra twenty pounds and moonlighted at a book publisher to morph into character.

The films soundtrack features performances by Sheryl Crow, Chaka Khan, Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye. Bridge Joness Diary was an international success grossing over $281 million worldwide. It is rated R for adult language and sexual content.
