Inspired by the story of the real-life Pettingill family, this Australian crime-drama revolves around 17-year-old Joshua 'J' Cody (James Frecheville) who witnesses his mom overdose on heroin, before moving in with his grandma Janine 'Smurf' Cody (Jacki Weaver)- the matriarch of a notorious Melbourne crime family.

Her eldest son Andrew (Ben Mendelsohn) is an armed robber being hunted by a rogue detective unit, second in line Craig (Stapleton) is a cold-blooded drug dealer, the youngest Darren (Luke Ford) is taking up after his two elder brothers. When the 3 brothers lure and kill two policemen the whole family is apprehended, but a clean detective (Guy Pearce) takes a human interest in J's situation and attempts to help...
