In a 1916 ball the Tsar Nicholas II (Rick Jones) was holding, the evil sorcerer Grigori Rasputin (Christopher Lloyd) storms in to lay a curse on the Tsar’s family- the Romanovs, of which, only Empress Marie (Angela Lansbury) and Grand Duchess Anastasia (Kirsten Dunst and later Meg Ryan) escape.
Aided by a young servant, Dimitri (John Cusack), they escape through a secret passageway in Anastasia’s room, but while jumping onto a moving train, Marie makes the jump, while Anastasia misses her footing and hits her head. Years later, after leaving the orphanage she grew up in when her memory was lost, Anastasia (now Anya) is inspired by the necklace Marie gave her to seek her family in Paris. In Paris, since her separation from Anastasia, Marie has offered 10 million rubles to anyone who can safely return Anastasia.
Dimitri, who stayed in Russia, now under communist rule, decides with his friend Vladimir (Kelsey Grammer) to present Marie with an Anastasia lookalike and collect the reward money. Somehow fate leads Anastasia to the deserted palace, where she encounters Dimitri and Vladimir. Struck by Anya’s resemblance to their Anastasia, the two friends decide to take her to Paris…
