A Walk to Remember (2002) is an adaptation of the identically titled best-selling romance novel by the same name. The pictures leading lady is none other than musician, fashion designer, and now actress Mandy Moore, who has moved from behind the microphone and in front of the camera. One of Moores earlier film roles, it set the stage for her later, and well-acclaimed performance in Chasing Liberty (2004).

Moore depicts Jamie Elizabeth Sullivan in A Walk to Remember, a shy, book smart, and beautiful young girl afraid to come out of her shell. As the daughter of a minister living in North Carolina her clothing is conservative; she sports identical designs each day, always accompanied by the same brown sweater. She is shunned and mocked by nearly all of her classmates, yet Jamie still smiles and continues to believe in humankinds inherent goodness.

One of Jamies regular hecklers is sports jock, class clown, and bad boy Landon Rollins Carter (Shane West). Throughout town Landon has earned a reputation for trouble and his latest antic has placed another teen in the local hospital. As punishment for his misbehavior Landon is forced to participate in a number of after-school activities, including the seemingly unmanly drama club.

Landon struggles for weeks to memorize lines for the clubs upcoming spring play, but each time fails. If the juvenile delinquent cannot meet the demands of the club he will be permanently expelled from school. With this in mind he reaches out to an unlikely helper: the unpopular Jamie Sullivan, who excels not only in the drama club, but all other school activities.

With some coaxing Jamie agrees to help the boy, despite her fathers fears of allowing the troubled youth not only into his home, but to be alone with his daughter. Strangely the ugly duckling has a positive effect on Landon, who slowly becomes more studious; both teens realize that, despite their opposing positions in the school lunch table hierarchy, they are falling in love. Yet Landon is not the only one who changes in the relationship: Jamie, while still dressing modesty, begins paying more attention to her outward appearance, donning more contemporary fashions and letting her hair down.

What seems like true love in the making is crushed though when Landon caves into peer pressure. One day at school Jamie approaches Landon while gathered with his friends, asking if he would like to hang out later. Rather than acknowledge his feelings for the young girl he insults her, and suggests that he would never give her the privilege of her company. Furious, and unwilling to have a secret friendship/romance with Landon she ends their relationship.

However Landon soon realizes the error of his ways and attempts to prove to Jamie that his feeling are genuine and real, regardless of what other students may think; in the process of doing so he not only finds a true love, but also his true self.

A Walk to Remember was a success amongst teen audiences; with a meager budget of $11 million it earned a gross revenue of more than $47 million worldwide. Additionally, it won both an MTV Movie Award and Teen Choice Award. The films soundtrack, naturally, is chalk full of Mandy Moore tracks including known hits such as Cry and Only Hope.

The picture is rated PG for thematic elements, language and some sensual material with a runtime of 101 minutes.
