Long Island, 1961. Sheryl O'Connor is a 17-year-old girl who was once a nice Catholic teenager, until she started to receive attention from boys. Following the sudden death of her father, she finds comfort with Rick, a young man working at the bowling center, who is known for being a greaser without a future. They soon fall in love and become the talk of the town. Sheryl is worshipped by Alice Bloom, her young neighbor who is bullied by her class mates. Because her parents are constantly arguing, she thinks of Sheryl and Rick's relationship as the symbol of love.
