Amol Palekar’s Paheli is a stirring cinematic adaptation of an old supernatural Folk tale. When we meet Lachchi (Rani Mukerji) at the beginning of the story, she is engaged to Kishanlal (Shahrukh Khan); however on her wedding night he informs her that he has to leave her alone for a period of Five years, on a business trip.
Having no word in the matter, all she can do is wait. To her surprise Kishanlal returns after only four days on the road, and informs his father that he has met an old man who told him to return home, where he will find 5 golden coins every morning. Everyone seems to accept the deal.
However 5 years pass and “another” Kishanlal shows up at the family door, bewildering everyone. Soon the truth is revealed about the true identity of the man who pretended to be Kishanlal, as a ghost who had reverted to this ruse to get closer to the woman he loves.
Now Lachchi is facing the biggest dilemma of her life, torn between the love of her Ghostly suitor, and her husband.
