The BBC’s Top Gear has earned a reputation across the globe not only as a superb source of knowledge regarding today’s most fascinating automobiles, but also for its entertaining take on the world of car aficionados. One need not be a gear head to appreciate the crew’s efforts. Segments such as ‘Star in a Reasonably Priced Car’ place celebrities behind the wheel of meager consumer cars, as they attempt to break other stars’ times around the show’s racetrack. At other times the guys amuse themselves by annihilating vehicles. A prime example of this is their famed durability test of Toyota’s Hilux truck. After dropping it from extreme heights, setting it on fire, submerging it in water, and a number of other abuses it continued to run without repair.
In another scenario the team attempted to assemble their own electric-powered car. They were not merely interested doing so for proof of concept however: their creation would require government certification, and eventually a review in a prominent automobile magazine. While the team’s car did eventually function, it did not manage to earn more than 1/5 stars according to one esteemed auto journalist.
After enduring a thirty-four year run, Top Gear has received relatively little negative criticism from either viewers or the press. Its anonymous and mysterious driver known only as The Stig test-drives a new high performance car each week around Top Gear’s famed racetrack. The program also includes special expeditions to exotic locations; in one case this was a race through the North Pole, while in another it was a trek through Romania.
In season 15 the venerable Hilux returns, this time attempting to withstand the extreme heat of a live volcano. Jeremy investigates the UK's famous Reliant Robin, an inexpensive three-wheeled vehicle notorious for flipping over. American rally driver Ken Block asserts that the Robin just needs a skilled driver, and gives it a whirl around the track himself. Cars reviewed include the Audi R8 V10 Spyder, Porsche 997 Turbo Cabriolet, and an automobile designed for the blind. Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, and Jeff Goldblum stop by for ‘Star in a Reasonably Priced Car.'
