Once an ordained minister, a terrible tragedy shook Katherine Winter's faith causing her to turn her back on God and become a professor of theology specialized in debunking religious phenomena.

One day Katherine (Hilary Swank) gets a call from her old colleague, Father Costigan (Stephen Rea), warning her that she is in grave danger, but this only angers Katherine and she hangs up before Costigan can explain. Katherine's assistant, Ben (Idris Elba) tells her that someone is here to see her; Doug Blackwell (David Morrissey), a science teacher from the nearby town of Haven, who asks her to come to town and explain why the river has turned blood-red. The town believes that a young girl, Loren (AnnaSophia Robb), has killed her older brother and is the cause behind the biblical plagues descending on Haven...
