The Closer

CIA-trained Brenda Leigh heads her own division in the LAPD. Her rep as 'The Closer' is not an easy title to live up to. It's a nickname saved for the toughest, most revered interrogators, who not only solve their respective cases, but break down the criminal facing them across the table, obtaining confessions and convictions galore - and probably saving many lives - in the process.

CIA-trained former Atalanta police officer is giver her own elite unit to run as Deputy Chief of the LAPD.  Brenda Leigh Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick) arrived to head the Priority Murder Squad [PMS], quickly readjusted by episode 3 to Priority Homicide Division [PHD]; a squad of elite LAPD officers that were to tackle the most impossible cases. Only problem is- they hate Brenda's guts, along with her blunt, no-crap attitude, total disregard for procedure in the face of getting results, and of course, her Southern belle accent.

Said to be fashioned after the Helen Mirren classic British crime drama Prime Suspects, The Closer is seen as an increase and evolution of what is acceptable to depict on TV for women in the workplace. Unlike Cagney & Lacey who always seemed to live up to the men on the show, Kyra revels in her femininity, getting the job done, while keeping a level head as members of her team probably try to discredit her efforts simply for being a woman.
