The Amazing Race is a reality television game show in which teams of two people who have some form of a preexisting personal relationship, race around the world in competition with other teams. Contestants strive to arrive first at "pit stops" at the end of each leg of the race to win prizes and to avoid coming last, which carries the possibility of elimination or a significant disadvantage in the following leg.

Contestants travel to and within multiple countries in a variety of transportation modes, including planes, taxis, rental cars, trains, buses, boats, and by foot. The clues in each leg point takes the teams to the next destination or direct them to perform a task, either together or by a single member. These challenges are related in some manner to the country or culture where they are located. Teams are progressively eliminated until three are left; at that point, the team that arrives first in the final leg is awarded a grand prize of $1 million.

The teams must navigate through unknown countries and terrain, taking on challenges they may have never tried before in their life. Each team is given an allowance at the beginning of each leg in the race that they may spend as they deem fit to help them get to the next pit stop in the quickest fashion. Along the way, the teams pick up route information, clues which guide them to their next destination. New to this season is the Yield card, which can be used to delay other teams at Route Information points.

The show is hosted y Philip John Keoghan, who has been nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for his work as a host on The Amazing Race, yet shared the glory of winning 6 for Outstanding Reality Competition Program.
