It's Not Just Another Cop Show NCIS- Season 8: Solving Murders – With a Sense of Humor

One might say it's been done before. Yet another police procedural drama akin to CSI. While there is undoubtedly a large influx of programs in that genre, and that NCIS itself was a spin off from JAG – another police procedural, NCIS brings something unique to the table.

One might say it's been done before.  Yet another police procedural drama akin to CSI.  While there is undoubtedly a large influx of programs in that genre, and that NCIS itself was a spin off from JAG – another police procedural, NCIS brings something unique to the table.  It successfully manages to blend serious subject matter, like criminal investigations involving the Navy and Marines with a somewhat jovial cast – giving the program a less tense, even comedic undertone.  Obviously the program's creators are doing something right, since the show has endured 8 seasons, with no end in the immediate future.

Each week the sleuths located in a DC Naval Yard attempt to solve a new crime, often a murder.  The key characters are Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), head of the Major Case Response Team; Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette), a geeky forensic analyst; Mossad liaison Ziva David (Cote de Pablo); and Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Donald 'Ducky' Mallard (David McCallum).

A common theme throughout season 8 involves Gibbs coming to grips with earlier years in the military, and the present consequences of various past decisions.  Meanwhile Ziva's vital connection to the Mossad begins to compensate for her lack of linguistic prowess.

In the season premiere the Mexican cartel is still determined to assassinate Gibbs, while Jethro devises a strategy that will hopefully crush Paloma and his associates.  Later, the team attempts to pin down a suspicious substitute English teacher (portrayed by Lost's Sam Anderson) who may be involved in a kidnapping.  Next, a female Marine guns down a home intruder in a strange case that entangles NCIS with the FBI.

NCIS has been nominated for two Emmy Awards.  Its success spawned a spin off, NCIS: Los Angeles.  Rather than have musicians compose songs around various episodes, show producers wrote stories based around artists' preexisting work.  This method has led to a uniquely strong soundtrack compared to other television shows, featuring artists like John Mellencamp, Bob Dylan, Oasis, Ministry, and many more.
