(mbc.net) In early nineteenth-century New York, American-born residents in the city's Five Points neighborhood were growing tiresome of newly arriving Irish immigrants.  Both sides began to form gangs to protect themselves, and Amsterdam Vallon's (Leonardo DiCaprio) father led the Irish faction. Vallon witnessed rival gang leader Bill Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis) murder his father as a child, and vowed to avenge his death.

20-years after his father's killing, New York is still rife with racial and ethic tension, especially amidst the Civil War.  Cutting is now a major political figure in the city, but Vallen's anger has not diminished.

Gangs of New York won two Golden Globes and was nominated for 10 Oscars, 2 Grammys, 2 MTV Movie Awards, and a Teen Choice Award.  The picture earned $193 million internationally, nearly twice its $97 million budget.
