(mbc.net) Pete McCormack's documentary Facing Ali recounts memorable moments in the 3-time world heavyweight champion's career through the eyes of ten of his fiercest opponents: George Chuvalo, Sir Henry Cooper, George Foreman, "Smokin'" Joe Frazier, Larry Holmes (a former sparring partner of Ali), Ron Lyle, Ken Norton, Earnie Shavers, Leon Spinks and Ernie Terrell.
Born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. in 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky, Muhammad Ali earned the respect of his rivals before his audiences. The film deals with the accounts of his contenders on his career and fights, Ali's relationship to the organization 'Nation of Islam' and both its leader Elijah Muhammad [who gave Ali his name Muhammad Ali], as well as its iconic minister, Malcolm X.
The film also delves into the stripping of Ali of his heavyweight title, due to his refusal to enlist in the US Army and serve in the ongoing war in Vietnam in 1967, due to moral and religious convictions. On June 28, 1970, Ali would later be reinstated as world champion by a Supreme Court decision where 8 Justices voted unanimously that the grounds to strip of his title by the New York State Athletic Commission were unfounded.
