On the Behavioral Analysis Unit are:

FBI BAU Supervisory Special Agent/Unit Chief Aaron "Hotch" Hotchner - is the head of the BAU Team. His story revolves around balancing his family life and career. Prior to joining the BAU, he was a lawyer, a prosecutor and at one point, SWAT. He sometimes teaches hostage situations and negotiations. He is silent, smiles very little and shares little of his personal life.

FBI BAU Supervisory Special Agent Jason Gideon he was said to have had a nervous breakdown after sending six men into a warehouse with a bomb in it. All six agents were killed and he was heavily criticized for his decision. It is most likely due to this that Hotchner is the head of the unit. It is known that Gideon worked for the CIA, though no one knows how deep his work was with the agency. Although it is forbidden, Gideon sometimes profiles his colleagues, helping them with personal issues.

FBI BAU Special Agent Elle Greenaway - as formerly assigned to the FBI Field Office in Seattle, Washington, and assigned to the BAU as an expert in sexual offense crimes. Her father was a police officer, but was killed in the line of duty. She has something to prove.

FBI BAU Supervisory Special Agent Dr. Spencer Reid - is a genius who graduated from a public high school at age twelve and went to Cal Tech (with Yale as his safety school) at thirteen where he earned three doctorates in Mathematics, Chemistry and Engineering by the age of twenty one. He has an IQ of 187, an eidetic memory, and can read 20,000 words per minute. He is something of a student/mentor to Gideon.

Many more make up the BAU team. In the opening season, Supervisory Special Agent Jason Gideon returns to the Behavioral Analysis Unit after an extended medical leave, and BAU team leader Aaron Hotchner must secretly evaluate Gideon's performance. Gideon's first case upon his return involves tracking down an unsub (unknown subject) in Seattle before he kills his latest kidnap victim. Throughout the season, the team will take on serial killers, rapists, and kidnappers while juggling their own complications of their personal lives.

The show has been nominated for a primetime Emmy and won 6 other awards.
