United Nations Volunteer Program and MBC Hope “Doing Good” Competition unite under one roof during its second annual event to honor and grant awards to the “Arab Youth Volunteering for a Better Future” project, and to MBC Hope’s “Doing Good” competition winners. The event took place in Dubai, UAE, in the presence of the guest of honor Ahmad Alhendawi- United Nations Secretary- General’s Special Envoy on Youth.

The event was divided into two parts; the first being the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) program & MBC Hope celebrating the positive energy, creativity and community spirit of young volunteers who are acting as the catalysts in fostering “Hope” in the MENA Region, via a strategic partnership between both entities, UNV & MBC Hope.

While the second part of the event was to announce and distribute MBC Hope’s 2nd annual “Doing Good” competition awards, under four specific categories: “Humanitarian Issues”; “Social Entrepreneurship & Start-Up"; “Innovation & Creativity”; and “Energy & Environment”.

The event witnessed significant presence by prominent figures, namely, Ahmad Alhendawi- United Nations Secretary- General’s Special Envoy on Youth, who specially attended the event ceremony all the way from New York; in addition to the CEO of ARAMEX and Founder & CEO of “RUWAD” Fadi Ghandour, as well as MBC Group’s CEO Sam Barnett, and members of the press and media industry, among other guests and MBC Management.

Furthermore, Mazen Hayek, MBC Group’s Official Spokesman and Group Director of PR & Commercial handed out the “Doing Good” competition awards along with the respective jury members of each category: Dr. Moez El Shohdi, CEO and Co-founder of the Egyptian Food Bank; representing Ms. Soraya Salti, Sean Rush, President & CEO JA Worldwide; Dr. Oussama Rifahi, The Executive  Director, The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (“AFAC”); and Dr. Majdah Aburas, Deputy Executive Director for The Saudi Environmental Society & Assistant Professor in the Microbiology and Biotechnology Department at King Abdulaziz University (KAU).

“Arab Youth Volunteering for a Better Future” project- UNV:

Ahmad Alhendawi, United Nations Secretary- General’s Special Envoy on Youth, awarded the 5 winners in kind and material; the winners included:

1. Zina El Nahel (Egypt): for her role in the activation of the education process by informal institutions and non-governmental organizations.

2. Hadeel AbuSoufeh (Jordan): for her role in supporting social projects related to facilitate the lives of people with special needs.

3.Amal Al Saqal (Yemen): for her role in stimulating the role of students in volunteer work renaissance and community building.

4. Lamia Bazir (Morocco): for her role in supporting projects that deal with women's empowerment and the development of their role in society.

5. Saifeddin Jlassi (Tunisia): for his role in the rehabilitation of young people in areas of arts and drama.

As for the “Doing Good” competition, the four winners in each category included:

2. Social Entrepreneurship & Start Up: This category is headed by Mrs. Soraya Salti, previous CEO of INJAZ Al-Arab, however was represented by Sean Rush, President & CEO JA Worldwide, on Soraya’s behalf

  • Country: Saudi & Jordan
  • Winner: Dr. Mowafa Said Househ & Dr. Hassan Bin Abdu Oribi, for their project “community solutions for overweight and obesity in the Arab world”

4.  Energy & Environment: This category is headed by Dr. Majdah Aburas, Deputy Executive Director for The Saudi Environmental Society & Assistant Professor in the Microbiology and Biotechnology Department at King Abdulaziz University (KAU)

  • Country:  Egypt
  • Winner: Habiba Mahmoud Abdelmallek & Ne’ma Mohammad Al Jawadi won the award for defense against “Dawayer Studio” project, to recycle agricultural waste and eliminate the black cloud, in Egypt

During the event, Ahmad Alhendawi, United Nations Secretary- General’s Special Envoy on Youth said: “Despite the progress in education, the question remains about the quality of education in the region, especially in the presence of a youthful community that is capable of being leaders and entrepreneurs”. He added: “All challenges are opportunities if they were treated to create solutions; but the real wealth lies in the existing knowledge of the youth, especially now that we are in dire need of talented youth in this day and age”.

While Fadi Ghandour, CEO of ARAMEX and Founder & CEO of “RUWAD”, commented on: “We need to involve entrepreneurs to find effective solutions to the problems afflicting key developmental issues in the Arab world”; Ghandour further added: “The goal that we seek lies in reaching a long-term developmental leadership strategy”. With regards to Ruwad, Fadi said: “Ruwad was first established to serve the idea of development in various Arab countries, and I urge all institutions to follow the footsteps of Ruwad when it comes to development...as the institutions that indulge in development are pioneers of change in society”.

From his side, Sam Barnett, MBC Group CEO said: “For the 2nd consecutive year, we meet under the umbrella of the “Doing Good” competition to collectively share together the responsibility of sharpening the capacity of the youth, and elevate their potentials, while urging them to stimulate social responsibility within their daily lives”. Barnett added: “Year after year, our strategic partnerships expand and widen, and our partnership with the UNV this year is yet another testimony”. Barnett concluded with: “ The challenge remains in our ability to translate initiatives and sincere intentions into institutional work that is both sustainable and effective, contributing to the essence of “MBC Hope” and its underlying objective of spreading HOPE, whether that be in stimulating their creativity, uplifting their potentials or supporting entrepreneurship and social work”.
